As an employee, you may have the right to inspect your employer's personnel record under state regulations, depending on which state you reside in, as long as the inspecting is somehow linked to your performance or a complaint that you recently made or are contemplating making.
Workers that no longer work at a specific company, whether it be because they quit, were terminated, or were laid off, may also be allowed to take a look at their employment record. While this is not as clear as the current worker rule, it is still a right that previous workers are often granted under state law.
