With Erb’s palsy, the nerves within the brachial plexus are damaged due to injury such as in complicated births or injuries to infants in the early years of life. The brachial plexus, a network of nerves, starts in the spinal cord and is responsible for the control of the movement of the shoulder, arm, and hand muscles. Brachial plexus injuries, such as those suffered in newborns, with Erb’s palsy can inhibit function in the arm or leave the arm paralyzed entirely.
Did you know? The nerves primarily affected in Erb’s palsy are the suprascapular nerves. In addition to the suprascapular nerves, the musculocutaneous and axillary nerves are severely damaged as well. |
