Cerebral / Erb's Palsy: Brachial Plexus Injury

Brachial plexus injuries, also known as brachial plexus palsy, Erb's Palsy and Klumpke's palsy, are due to a birth problem known as get dystocia. These kinds of situations may include healthcare carelessness and negligence, because these conditions are often direct and avoidable. Minor injuries may get better on their own, but serious brachial plexus injuries require surgery repair.

Was your child a victim of a brachial plexus injury due to the negligence of a medical professional? You may be entitled to monetary compensation in a medical malpractice lawsuit. Contact a medical malpractice attorney in your area today to learn more!

The four types of brachial plexus nerve injuries are:

  • Rupture
  • Neuroma
  • Avulsion
  • Stretch/Neuropraxia/Praxis Injury

When an injury happens, a range of injuries can follow, with a damaged arm and stress of the sensor fibers that travel through the area – a condition known as brachioplexus. Some aspects that have most often been present when brachial plexus injuries happen include a heavy or huge child, lengthy birthing process, excessive force being used during the birth (feet or bottom first). While these aspects do not generally cause a brachial plexus damage each time they happen, many of them do happen when the injuries are continual.

Neuropraxia is the most harmless way of brachial plexus damage and is damaged, but un-torn sensor cells in the child. Most situations of neuropraxia cure themselves within a few months without treatment. A crack happens when the brachial plexus sensors fibres are divided, but not completely off of the vertebrae area. A neuroma happens when the sensors cells are damaged and the producing scars increases too much, impacting the nerve. Avulsion is the most serious way of brachial plexus damage and involves the entire separating of the sensors from the backbone.

Has your baby sustained a brachial plexus injury due to a negligent doctor during the birthing process? Our medical malpractice attorneys are here to help.
