Hidden Tape Shows Nursing Home Abuse at Mount Pleasant Manor, SC

The nursing home abuse at Mount Pleasant Manor in Mount Pleasant, SC was captured in video and audio footage from a hidden camera.

The 101-year old victim’s grand-daughter Julie Johnston held a press conference and played audio clips she said were recorded at the nursing home. In the clips, Johnston’s grandfather claims that Kimbrough is sexually assaulting him and had hurt his back.

After finding out about the sexual and physical abuse which included someone at the nursing home putting detergent in the old man’s eyes, Johnston got a private detective to install a hidden camera in the nursing home. The family did not release the full video, but did show some clips.

The 101-year old victim was shown trying to protect himself from former Mount Pleasant employee Desmond Kimbrough, 44, of North Charleston. The video shows Kimbrough shouting and taunting the victim, and even physically poking and slapping the 101-year old man. The victim throws water on Kimbrough and tries to get to his phone.

After reviewing the video, the family contacted the Mt. Pleasant police. Desmond Kimbrough then surrendered to police and was charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult. He was set free after a judge granted a $100,000 bond.

Mount Pleasant Manor management says they are cooperating with the police investigation, and conducting their own internal investigation as well.

Even after all this, Johnston said she was finding it difficult to get her grandfather out of the nursing home because of the lack of available Medicaid beds in nursing homes across the state. Apparently, there are 8,000 elderly and sick people on the waiting lists of the nursing homes in South Carolina.

For now, the 101-year old victim remains a resident at Mount Pleasant Manor.
