Both the Mazda and SUV overturned, and the SUV ended up on top of a tall fountain in front of the hotel and caught on fire. Daniel Dolcater of Gulfport, age 20, was the operator of the SUV, and was transported to a local medical facility with severe head injuries. According to sergeant Ray Anthony, the motorcycle officer that was about to pull over Dolcater clocked him at going 69 mph in a 35 mph zone. Dozens of individuals strolling down the street and dining in restaurants witnessed the accident. One restaurant host across the street said that it almost sounded like a bomb going off. Witnesses also attempted to extinguish the fire by using the water from the fountain to put out the large flames that resulted from the crash. On the street, the SUV driver was found lying on the ground. The driver and passenger of the sedan were motionless in their vehicle—the man was already dead with the woman barely having a pulse. The investigation into what resulted in the accident remained open Saturday. Law enforcement officials are waiting for toxicology test results and the case is being reviewed to determine appropriate charges.
