Washington Legal Overview: Seattle The Seattle metropolitan area in Washington State is defined by the Census Bureau as covering King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. This three-county metro area, officially known as the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA MSA, is comprised of two metropolitan divisions. One is the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, WA Metropolitan Division, which covers covering King and Snohomish counties. The second one is the Tacoma, WA Metropolitan Divisionm which covers Pierce County. The superior court in each county is the main trial court with general jurisdiction.

The superior court appeals in turn will be heard by Division I of the Washington State Court of Appeals, which is located in Seattle. The Washington State Supreme Court is the court of last resort. Federal cases in King and Snohomish counties must be filed with the Seattle Division of the U. S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Federal cases for Pierce County go to the same court’s Tacoma Division.
