Virginia Legal Overview: Washington-Arlington-Alexandria The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metropolitan area covers Washington D.C., and 21 other counties and independent cities across three states. The MSA includes 10 counties and five independent cities in Virginia, five counties in Maryland, and one county in West Virginia. The MSA is a part of the larger Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia, DC-MD-VA-WV CSA. This combined statistical area additionally includes two more MSAs (Baltimore-Towson MSA in Maryland and the Winchester, VA-WV MSA) and two micropolitan areas (Lexington Park, MD and Culpeper, VA).
