One of these severe issues that many patients have been experiencing since receiving the implant is pain and other symptoms that indicate muscle damage.
Normally, hip replacements have known to last approximately fifteen to thirty years, but new metal-on-metal systems are causing an array of problems for patients. An estimated 93,000 patients have received DePuy Hip Replacements and studies estimate that at least 1 in 8 of these patients have required, or will eventually require, a more painful and risky corrective surgery due to muscle damage and other problems. Currently, 3.4 percent of patients with metal-on-metal hip implants have already reported muscle damage, confirmed by their physicians. Muscle damage results from the metal used in the implants; the severe inflammation caused by the metal used results in damage to the surrounding muscle, tendons, bone, and other soft tissue. Did you know? Muscle damage occurs in patients with metal-on-metal hip replacement systems when the metal breaks off and fragments enter the bloodstream, causing damage to nerves and muscle tissue. In addition to the metal in DePuy hip replacements causing muscle damage, the metal has resulted in a condition known as Metallois. Metallosis occurs when metal rubs on the joint that it is placed near. When these harmful metals enter the bloodstream, they not only result in muscle and tissue damage but they can cause metallic poisoning. |
