When twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome happens, the placenta cannot give the proper amount of blood and nutrients between what is referred to as monochorionic twins while in uteri. Simply put, this issue can occur if the blood vessels of the two babies are joined together, but one baby gets more blood flow than the other baby from a joint placenta. Medical professionals classify this a hazardous condition that can have serious complications.
In a pregnancy that has not progressed to week 26, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome can result in both babies passing away, or can result in serious disabilities. If, however, the gestational period reaches beyond the 26 week mark, then the twins can usually be delivered and not sustain any permanent injuries. Did you know? The twin who receives more than the proper amount of blood to survive is usually referred to as the recipient twin. This baby can also experience issues as a result of rapid development. |
