Local Law Firms Home > Medical Malpractice Overview > Birth Defects > Prescription Drug Defects Painkillers and prescription drugs, when used as directed, are normally not harmful and do not pose a threat to the patient. However, when a patient is pregnant, the doctor must inform her of the risks that are associated with these medications. Some of the most common painkillers such as Vicodin, Codeine, Percocet and OxyContin have recently been connected to a variety of very severe birth defects. A recent report has been released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), that will be seen in a future issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. To date it is the biggest report ever conducted on the use of certain prescription drugs. The results of the report are especially disturbing because up until now opioid prescription drugs have been thought to be somewhat safe for use during pregnancy. As a matter of fact, most of these prescription medications have been around for years and are now offered as generics.
