The symptoms and signs of Erb’s palsy are often quite obvious soon after birth. Some symptoms that a baby may have the condition are an absence of movement in the hand or arm, decreased grip, lack of the Moro reflex (a startled reaction when the head drops after being released) and weak or lack of proper arm position. Babies who have sustained a brachial plexus injury may experience various Erb’s palsy signs, depending on the variation of arm paralysis they have sustained. In most situations, a brachial plexus injury only impacts movement in the upper arm. With Erb’s palsy, both the upper arm and the capacity to rotate the lower arm are impacted. Babies with Klumpke’s palsy, a similar condition, may experience weakness or lack of movement in the hands, as well as a drooping eyelid on the other side. If a physician suspects that a baby has sustained a brachial plexus injury, he or she may run diagnostic exams to determine whether Erb’s palsy is the diagnosis. Did you know? |
