In a criminal trial, a jury thoroughly reviews the evidence to determine if, "beyond a reasonable doubt," the defendant is guilty of committing the crime in question. A trial is the government's chance to present its case, in the expectation of reaching a "guilty" verdict and a sentence of the defendant. Additionally, a trial gives the defense team an opportunity to contest the government's proof, and to provide its own in some scenarios. After both sides have presented their cases, the jury deliberates as a group whether to find the defendant guilty or not guilty of the act.
